In addition to our surgeons that are always on staff, Surgi-Care Center for Horses provides specialists including two ACVO board certified ophthalmologists and a dermatologist.

Dr. Michele Stengard received her Doctor of Veterinary Medicine degree with honors from the University of Florida College of Veterinary Medicine in 1996. She went on to complete an internship in 1997 at VCA South Shore Animal Hospital in Weymouth, Massachusetts. At the University of Georgia College of Veterinary Medicine, Dr. Stengard finished a residency in Ophthalmology in 2000. During her residency, she published research in the area of medical treatment of glaucoma. Dr. Stengard practiced equine ophthalmology at Animal Eye Specialty Clinics of South Florida in West Palm Beach before relocating to the Tampa area in 2003. Dr. Stengard is a member of the American College of Veterinary Ophthalmologists and has given presentations to veterinarians, riding clubs and other public organizations regarding various topics on equine ophthalmology. Her interests include diseases and surgery of the equine cornea, cataract removal surgery, and medical and surgical treatment for equine glaucoma.

Dr. Tammy Miller, a native of Pennsylvania, received her Doctor of Veterinary Medicine (D.V.M.) and combined masters (M.S.) degrees from The Ohio State University in 1999. Prior to veterinary school, Dr. Miller worked as a technician for one of the founding fathers of veterinary ophthalmology, Milt Wyman, who instilled in her a love for all things ocular. Following veterinary school, she then completed a rotating small animal medicine and surgery internship at Colorado State University. Dr. Miller completed her specialty training in a 3-year comparative ophthalmology residency and masters (MSpVM) program at North Carolina State University in 2003. Following the completion of her residency, she joined the faculty at NCSU as an assistant professor of ophthalmology before joining Florida Veterinary Specialists in 2008.

Dr. Michael Canfield graduated from Mississippi State College of Veterinary Medicine in 1999. After a number of years in practice, Dr. Canfield's interests in dermatology flourished, ultimately leading him to accept an American College of Veterinary Dermatology approved dermatology residency with Animal Dermatology Clinic located in Tustin, California. Following two years of intense training, Dr. Canfield completed his residency with Animal Dermatology Clinic. Dr. Canfield continued with Animal Dermatology Clinic in Marietta, GA on a regular basis until March of 2008 when he relocated to Tampa. Dr. Canfield is a member of the AAEP and looks forward to the opportunity to continue his equine dermatology work with us here at Surgi-Care.
